    Krka National Park

    National Park

Krka's centrepiece is Skradinski Buk — a cascade of 17 travertine steps where the Krka river drops into a wide green pool. Wooden boardwalks weave right across the waterfalls; boats continue upriver to the tiny island monastery of Visovac and the more remote Roški Slap. Swimming below the falls stopped in 2021 to protect the fragile travertine, but the views and the accessibility (you can do the whole thing from Split in one long day) still make Krka one of Croatia's most rewarding parks.

    Skradinski Buk Waterfalls

    Waterfall

The Skradinski Buk waterfalls are the crown jewel of Krka National Park — a spectacular cascade of 17 distinct travertine waterfalls dropping 46 metres over a 400-metre stretch of the Krka river, arguably the most photographed natural feature in Dalmatia. The falls form where the Krka river breaks through a limestone barrier into a wide basin; the mineral-rich water constantly deposits new travertine that in turn creates new falls, meaning the whole feature is a living, growing geological process. A superb 1.9-km wooden boardwalk loops through the falls with 15 bridges, wooden platforms and observation points at every angle — a genuine walking-through-a-waterfall experience. In summers past visitors could swim at the base of the main fall, but this was banned in 2021 to protect the fragile travertine ecosystem — the boardwalk-plus-observation loop remains extraordinary. A small ethnographic village at the site displays a working watermill, a traditional stone-washing wheel, and blacksmith's forge — all powered by side-channels of the river. Access is by park bus from the Lozovac entrance (5 minutes) or by boat from Skradin (25 minutes, more romantic). Come at 08:00 opening for solitude and best morning light; from 11:00 to 16:00 in July and August the boardwalks become uncomfortably crowded.
