- 1Dubrovnik City Walls
UNESCO
Dubrovnik's walls are the completest medieval fortification circuit in Europe — 1,940 metres unbroken, up to 25 metres tall on the land side and 6 metres thick on the sea side. Walking them takes 1.5 to 2 hours; go early (they open at 8 AM) or in the last two hours before closing to escape the crowds. Along the way you'll pass three fortresses, the Rector's Palace, red roofs stretching in every direction, and views out to Lokrum island.

- 2Fort Lovrijenac
Fortress
A near-vertical rock fortress rising 37 m out of the sea just west of Dubrovnik's walls — the Republic's 'Gibraltar', built to block the Venetians from ever taking the city from land or sea.
