Why visit
Why visit Dubrovnik City Walls
Dubrovnik's walls are the completest medieval fortification circuit in Europe — 1,940 metres unbroken, up to 25 metres tall on the land side and 6 metres thick on the sea side. Walking them takes 1.5 to 2 hours; go early (they open at 8 AM) or in the last two hours before closing to escape the crowds.

History
Dubrovnik's walls are the completest medieval fortification circuit in Europe — 1,940 metres unbroken, up to 25 metres tall on the land side and 6 metres thick on the sea side. Walking them takes 1.5 to 2 hours; go early (they open at 8 AM) or in the last two hours before closing to escape the crowds. Along the way you'll pass three fortresses, the Rector's Palace, red roofs stretching in every direction, and views out to Lokrum island.
“Almost two-thirds of Dubrovnik's medieval roof tiles were replaced after the 1991 shelling — you can spot the darker, weathered originals from the newer ones on the walls tour.”
