Why visit
Why visit Golubinjak Forest Park
Just outside the village of Lokve, Golubinjak is a magical 40-hectare forest park protecting a stand of ancient silver fir and beech trees, some over 350 years old and 45 metres tall — the closest thing Croatia has to an accessible primeval forest experience. Three well-marked loop trails of 1, 2 and 3 km meander through the mossy old-growth, past dramatic karst rock features including the 'Chair of the Duke' — a natural throne-shaped rock formation — and the 'Devil's Rock' overhang.

History
Just outside the village of Lokve, Golubinjak is a magical 40-hectare forest park protecting a stand of ancient silver fir and beech trees, some over 350 years old and 45 metres tall — the closest thing Croatia has to an accessible primeval forest experience. Three well-marked loop trails of 1, 2 and 3 km meander through the mossy old-growth, past dramatic karst rock features including the 'Chair of the Duke' — a natural throne-shaped rock formation — and the 'Devil's Rock' overhang. The star sight is the 'Great Grandfather' silver fir, a towering giant with a 5-metre circumference, believed to be over 400 years old. A small visitor centre near the car park sells trail maps and local honey. Golubinjak connects directly by trail to the neighbouring Lokvarka Cave (Croatia's third-longest show cave) making a superb combined half-day. Facilities include picnic tables, a small pond, and — for children — a fairy-tale trail with wooden carvings of characters from local folklore hidden along the loop. The whole park is astonishingly cool on hot summer days: temperatures can be 10 °C below what you'd experience at the coast.
“Golubinjak's 'Great Grandfather' silver fir was already 200 years old when Napoleon's troops marched through Gorski Kotar in 1809 en route to establish the Illyrian Provinces.”
