Overview

About North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan crossroads where Lake Ohrid — one of the oldest and deepest lakes on Earth — holds a UNESCO town of Byzantine churches. Skopje mixes an Ottoman bazaar with the stone bridge and the outsized statues of its recent makeover, while Bitola's Heraclea and Stobi survive from the Roman road. Three national parks, Mavrovo, Pelister and Galičica, cover mountains that rise above 2,700 m.

Travel tips

Good to know

  • 01

The currency is the denar (MKD); euros are often quoted but pay in denars.

  • 02

Skopje–Ohrid takes about three hours by bus; there is no useful train.

  • 03

Ohrid's summer festival in July–August fills every room — book early.

  • 04

Mavrovo and Pelister trails are snowbound until late May.

  • 05

Cafés open early and stay full; coffee culture runs on Turkish-style slow sipping.
