For a few years in the 18th century Varaždin was actually Croatia's capital, until a huge fire in 1776 moved the court back to Zagreb. Its wonderfully complete baroque old town — pastel palaces, arcaded courtyards, the white Stari Grad castle rising from an old moat — feels frozen in time.
