    Tršće — Frankopan Frontier Village

    Historical

Tucked in a green upland basin at 700 m, Tršće was for four centuries the administrative centre of the Čabar estate of the powerful Zrinski-Frankopan family and its historical importance far exceeds its modest present-day size. The elegant baroque parish church of St. Anthony (1732) has a beautifully preserved interior with an unusual folk-baroque altar carved by local craftsmen, and the small square in front is dominated by a monument to the Zrinski-Frankopan 1671 conspiracy — the fateful attempt to break Croatia free from Habsburg rule that ended with both dynasties executed and their estates confiscated by Vienna. The village has an atmospheric small museum in the restored 18th-century schoolhouse covering the Zrinski-Frankopan era, the region's iron-working history, and the traumatic Nazi burning of Tršće in 1943 when 42 villagers were killed. A pleasant 30-minute walk from the village centre leads to the atmospheric ruins of the medieval Frankopan castle on the hill above — free access, no signage. Tršće hosts one of the most authentic mountain harvest festivals in Croatia every September, with communal cabbage-shredding and homemade brandy tastings.
