    Biserujka Cave

    Cave

The only show cave on the island of Krk was known to shepherds as early as the 19th century — an entry in a Habsburg gazetteer of 1834 already describes local boys lowering themselves on ropes through the sinkhole entrance to gather calcite crystals to sell to sailors. Opened to the public in 1998 with wooden walkways and discreet lighting, the cave is small (about 110 metres of accessible galleries) but remarkably rich in formations: slender white stalactites, translucent calcite curtains, and one large freestanding column that gave the cave its Croatian name — biser means pearl. The temperature holds steady at 13°C year-round, offering welcome relief on July afternoons. The 40-minute guided tour is available in Croatian, English, German and Italian. Above ground, the cave sits on a scenic plateau above the village of Rudine with views across to the wooded interior of Krk and, on very clear days, the peaks of Velebit — a lovely spot for a picnic. Combine easily with a stop at the nearby fishing village of Šilo or the beautiful Klimno mudflats (locally famed for their therapeutic mineral mud). Torch not needed; wear light layers and closed shoes as the cave floor is damp.
