Kosinj Valley & Traditional Water Mills

    Historical

The remote Kosinj valley, hidden between the Lika river and the western Velebit foothills, is one of the most historically significant places in Croatia that almost no tourist ever visits. This was where the first printed book in the Croatian language — the Kosinj Missal, printed in Glagolitic script in 1483 — is believed to have been produced, making Kosinj arguably the birthplace of Croatian print culture just 30 years after Gutenberg. A modest but well-curated memorial exhibit in the village of Gornji Kosinj tells the story with a facsimile of the missal. Beyond the historical claim, Kosinj is spectacularly beautiful: a broad green polje ringed by the karst ramparts of Velebit, dotted with traditional whitewashed farmsteads and drystone walls, and threaded by the emerald Lika river. Several traditional wooden water mills still turn on the river and grind local buckwheat, tucked into willow groves; two have been restored as visitable ethnographic exhibits. Excellent food at Vila Velebita restaurant in Donji Kosinj — smoked Gacka trout, potato bread, Lika lamb roasted under an iron bell. The whole valley feels 200 years untouched by tourism.
