- 1Kuća Velebita — House of Velebit
Museum
Croatia's most modern nature-interpretation centre opened in 2013 in the sleepy Velebit village of Krasno, right beside the Northern Velebit National Park headquarters. The building itself is a beautifully modernist structure of local timber and slate, deliberately styled after a traditional Lika farmhouse. Inside, a two-storey multimedia exhibit walks you through the geology, karst hydrology, flora, fauna and human history of the entire Velebit massif — with talking-cave installations, immersive video projections of griffon vultures in flight, and a giant sculpted cross-section of the Lukina Jama pit cave. Kids get a scavenger hunt with a magnifying glass; adults can spend a happy hour in the room dedicated to Lika's herbal medicine tradition. The centre is the ideal orientation stop before venturing up into Northern Velebit itself — the staff sell park tickets, hand out excellent free trail maps, and can call ahead to the Zavižan hut to check weather. Krasno itself is worth a stroll: it houses Croatia's oldest working forestry office (1765) and a Marian pilgrimage church that draws thousands every 15 August. A small café inside the visitor centre serves proper Lika mountain tea.

- 2Krasno Marian Shrine
Church
Nestled at 700 m altitude in the mountain village of Krasno on the very edge of Northern Velebit National Park, the Shrine of Our Lady of Krasno is one of the oldest and most beloved Marian pilgrimage sites in Croatia — a tradition dating from 1642 when a small wooden chapel was built to a miraculous image of the Virgin. The present handsome baroque-neoclassical church dates from 1913 and its interior is unexpectedly rich for such a remote village: a gilded main altar, a fresco cycle by Slavko Šohaj, and — the pilgrimage focus — the small 17th-century painting of the Madonna and Child crowned with a jewelled Habsburg silver crown. Around 15,000 pilgrims arrive on foot every 15 August (Assumption), some walking three days from the coast over the Velebit ridge. The shrine complex includes a lovely arcaded pilgrim courtyard, a wooden Way of the Cross climbing the hillside behind, and a small ethnographic museum. Outside pilgrimage season, Krasno is a peaceful, cool, tree-shaded stop en route to the National Park visitor centre 500 m up the road. Excellent home-cooked mountain food at the local konoba.
