Lepoglava — Home of Croatian Lace

    Historical

A small town famous for two very different things: bobbin lace, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list, and a Pauline monastery school that was Croatia's first university (1503). The Pauline complex, later a notorious 20th-century prison, is now a museum.

    Lepoglava Lace Centre

    Museum

Lepoglava's bobbin lace, made continuously here since the 14th-century Pauline monks first taught the craft, was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible-heritage list in 2009. The town's Lace Centre runs demonstrations and an annual September lace festival where local makers work in the square.
