The cliffs of northern Cres are home to one of the last European colonies of griffon vultures — the birds have a 2.8-metre wingspan and feed almost exclusively on the carcasses of the island's free-roaming sheep. Eco-Centre Caput Insulae in the tiny village of Beli runs a rescue and information centre where you can see rehabilitating birds up close, then hike a marked forest trail to viewpoints where you'll almost certainly spot vultures riding the coastal thermals.
