    Beli & Griffon Vulture Centre

    Nature Park

In the wild northern half of the island of Cres, the tiny cliff-top village of Beli — fewer than 40 permanent residents — is the improbable capital of Croatia's most successful raptor conservation project. The Eco-centre Caput Insulae, founded in 1993 in a restored stone school building, runs the rescue and rehabilitation programme for the Eurasian griffon vulture, a magnificent 2.7-metre-wingspan scavenger that survives on Cres in one of only two European colonies still living directly on sea cliffs. About 100 breeding pairs nest on the eastern flank of the island; the centre houses injured birds in a large aviary while they recover, and daily guided visits explain the population's fascinating vertical hunt for washed-up sheep carcasses. Beyond the birds, Beli itself is a lovely medieval remnant: a Roman-era hillfort layered with Venetian houses, wrapped by 4 km of interpretive nature trails winding through beech and oak forest, past bear-shaped karst boulders, prehistoric burial mounds and refreshing swimming rock ledges at the base of the cliff. Reach Beli via the narrow 15-km road from Cres town — one of the most spectacular short drives in Croatia. Bring binoculars, walking shoes and time; this is not a place to rush.
