Trsat crowns a rocky bluff above Rijeka with a 13th-century Frankopan castle and — right next door — one of Croatia's most important Marian pilgrimage sites, the Trsat sanctuary. According to legend, the house of the Virgin Mary was carried by angels from Nazareth and stopped here for three years in the 13th century before flying on to Loreto in Italy. Climb the 561 Petar Kružić steps from downtown Rijeka for the traditional pilgrim's approach.
