- 1Premužić Trail
Mountain
Built between 1930 and 1933 by the forestry engineer Ante Premužić using local labour and hand-laid dry-stone construction, the Premužićeva Staza is one of Europe's finest mountain paths — 57 km of near-level ridgeline trail running along the crest of Velebit from Zavižan in the north to Baške Oštarije in the south, without ever exceeding a 10-degree gradient. It threads spectacularly through the karst forest of Rožanski and Hajdučki kukovi, a moon-scape of dolomite teeth and hidden dolines that would otherwise be impassable. The full traverse takes 3–5 days with overnight stops in the mountaineering huts of Alan and Ograđenica; sections can be sampled as day walks — the eight-kilometre stretch from Zavižan south to the striking Rossijevo Sklonište viewpoint is the classic taster and rewards you with a bird's-eye view over Rab, Krk and Cres. The trail is entirely waymarked with the traditional red-and-white targets and is exposed above the treeline, so weather-check before starting: summer thunderstorms roll in fast and shelters are basic. Wildlife you may cross paths with includes chamois, brown bear and golden eagle.

- 2Hajdučki & Rožanski Kukovi Strict Reserve
Nature Park
The most surreal landscape in Croatia lies at the heart of the Northern Velebit — a 12-square-kilometre labyrinth of grey limestone towers, sinkholes and karrenfields declared a Strict Nature Reserve in 1969. Named for the outlaws (hajduci) who once hid here from Ottoman patrols, the kukovi are a geological wonder: ice-age erosion has carved them into vertical needles of dolomite, some over sixty metres tall, spaced so densely that traversing the reserve off-trail is essentially impossible. Beneath your feet, the karst hides one of the world's most extreme underground systems — the Lukina Jama-Trojama pit, at 1,431 m the deepest cave in Croatia. Access is strictly limited: you can only enter along the Premužić Trail as it threads through the reserve, and camping, campfires and off-path walking are all forbidden. Come for the alien silence and the way the towers throw morning shadows like a stone forest of totem poles. Chamois and golden eagles are the reserve's most-seen wildlife; brown bear tracks appear regularly on the trail's dust. Bring good boots — the karst is razor-sharp and one misstep will slice a sole in half.
