    Gračišće

    Old Town

Perched on a low hilltop 8 km southeast of Pazin, Gračišće is the archetypal inland Istrian village — small enough to walk end-to-end in ten minutes, but rich enough in architecture that art historians treat it as a miniature open-air museum. Within a single square you find the Venetian-Gothic Salamon Palace (1467), the Bishop's Palace with its rare loggia, and the Romanesque church of St. Mary on the Square, whose exterior walls carry faded medieval frescoes still visible in raking light. A few metres away, the 14th-century church of St. Euphemia hides one of Istria's most complete Gothic fresco cycles inside its otherwise plain shell — the key is with a neighbour, and asking for it is part of the pleasure. Walk out past the town gate to the tiny cemetery church of St. Anthony for wide views over the vineyards of the Pazin basin — the region has been growing the indigenous Malvazija Istarska and Teran grapes since Roman times, and Gračišće's annual Wine Day on the last Sunday of March fills the piazza with tastings from surrounding villages. There are two excellent konoba-style restaurants (Marino and Buščina, both within a short drive) for lunch. Come during the week outside festival dates and you may well have the entire village to yourself; the silence, the smell of woodsmoke in autumn, and the raw stone underfoot make it one of the great quiet corners of Istria.
