    Tuk Vojni Mountain Village

    Historical

The tiny hamlet of Tuk Vojni, spread across a high forest clearing at 850 m elevation between Ravna Gora and Mrkopalj, is one of the most atmospheric and least-visited settlements in Gorski Kotar — a cluster of just 30 traditional wooden mountain-Croatian farmhouses, most from the late 19th century, still lived in by a handful of families keeping the traditional shepherding and cheese-making culture alive. Several houses have been preserved as an open-air ethnographic museum coordinated by the Gorski Kotar Cultural Association, with guided visits available on advance booking through Ravna Gora tourist office. The tiny wooden chapel of St. Michael (1785), with folk-baroque frescoes inside, is a gem that few tourists ever see. A signposted 2-km loop trail from the hamlet takes in the surrounding hay meadows (protected as a Natura 2000 site for their rich orchid flora), a small karst spring and the atmospheric hollow of a pre-WWII partisan hideout. Excellent traditional lunches by advance booking at Konoba Marijanović — homemade cheese, cured lamb, buckwheat porridge with wild-mushroom sauce, all from the family's own produce. The mountain silence here is total.
