- 1Gerovo Village & Ethnographic Trail
Historical
Gerovo is one of the highest villages in Croatia (750 m) and a quiet gem of Gorski Kotar mountain-Habsburg architecture, with a small but beautifully cohesive centre of pastel plaster houses, an elegant late-baroque parish church of St. Sebastian (1750) and a lovely wooden covered market. What makes it truly worth a stop is the excellent 3-km signposted ethnographic trail that loops through the village outskirts and past six restored traditional workplaces: a working water mill still grinding local buckwheat, a blacksmith's forge, a sawmill, a linen-processing workshop, a bee-keeping station and a working charcoal kiln. Each has a Croatian/English information panel, and in summer local craftspeople demonstrate their trade every Saturday morning. The village has produced several important figures in Croatian science — most notably the 19th-century botanist Ljudevit Vukotinović, whose family home is marked with a plaque — and the tiny local library, open Wednesday mornings, has a fine collection of his herbarium specimens. Lovely traditional lunches at Konoba Sabljak — the local speciality is 'štuki', hand-rolled potato-and-cheese dumplings served with brown butter and sage.
