    Vrelo Cave — Fužine

    Cave

A five-minute walk from the centre of Fužine village, the small but delightful Vrelo Cave is one of Croatia's most accessible show caves — a 300-metre horizontal gallery of stalactites, stalagmites and translucent calcite curtains illuminated by discreet warm lighting. Discovered in 1957 during construction of the Bajer reservoir dam and opened to the public in 1961, the cave has become a beloved family-friendly attraction because of how easy the visit is: a flat concrete walkway loops through the whole cave in about 30 minutes, with informative panels in Croatian and English at every major formation. Highlights include the 'Christmas Tree' (a 4-metre stalagmite decorated with concentric calcite rings), the 'Ballerina' (a delicate hourglass-shaped column) and the 'Rainbow Curtain' (a wall of translucent flowstone that glows amber in the lighting). Constant temperature 8 °C year-round — bring a light jacket. The visit is guided; tours leave every hour in summer, less frequently off-season. Combined with a walk around Bajer Lake and lunch in Fužine village, Vrelo makes an excellent gentle family half-day.

    Bajer Lake

    Lake

Bajer is the largest of three artificial lakes surrounding the village of Fužine — a 210,000-square-metre reservoir created in 1953 when the Ličanka river was dammed for hydroelectric power. Ringed by pine and beech forest and topped by the pretty pastel houses of Fužine climbing the hillside, it has become Gorski Kotar's most-loved family day-trip destination: a flat, waymarked 3.5-km promenade circles the whole lake with wooden bridges, small piers, benches and picnic pavilions. Rowboats and pedalos can be hired in summer from the lakeside café, and swimming is allowed and popular on hot July afternoons — the water reaches a fresh but bearable 22 °C by August. The lake is also a superb bass and trout fishing venue; permits sold in the village. A short walk from the promenade takes you to the fascinating Vrelo Cave, whose underground stream feeds the lake. Fužine itself is a lovely Alpine-style mountain village with several excellent traditional konobe serving local specialities: mountain lamb, forest-mushroom risotto and homemade bilberry pie. Just 30 minutes off the A6 motorway between Zagreb and Rijeka.

    Fužine & Bajer Lake

    Lake

Called 'the Croatian Switzerland', Fužine sits on the shore of Bajer, a dammed lake circled by an easy walking and cycling path. Pedal boats, quiet cafés, forest picnic spots. It's the easiest highland stop between Rijeka and Zagreb — a lungful of cold pine air 20 minutes off the motorway.
