    Asseria Roman Ruins

    Archaeological

In the karst hills 25 km inland from Zadar, near the small town of Benkovac, lie the extraordinary ruins of Asseria — a substantial Illyrian and then Roman city that flourished from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, and now one of Croatia's most rewarding under-visited archaeological sites. The site's excavated remains include an entire circuit of remarkably preserved Roman city walls (still standing to 4–5 metres in places), the ceremonial gateway of the emperor Trajan (built AD 113 with the original inscription still legible), the forum with its temple podium, the basilica, a large public bath complex, and a stunning 4th-century AD Christian basilica with mosaic floors. What makes Asseria special is the total absence of any modern encroachment — the ruins sit in an open meadow of wild flowers, and you often have the whole site entirely to yourself. A small on-site interpretation centre (opened 2020) provides excellent English/Croatian information panels and reconstruction drawings. The site is free and always accessible, but the interpretation centre is only open Wednesday to Sunday. Best combined with a visit to the neighbouring Benkovac fortress (a Kotromanović-family stronghold from the 14th century) and a lunch of Dalmatian pršut at one of Benkovac's excellent traditional konobas. A must-see for anyone interested in the Roman world.
