History
The tiled roof of St. Mark's — bearing the medieval coats of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia, Slavonia and Zagreb — is the single most-photographed image in Zagreb. The church stands on Gornji Grad's main square, flanked by the Croatian parliament and government buildings. Its Gothic doorway is one of the finest in south-eastern Europe.
“The famous tiled roof isn't medieval at all — it was added during a total restoration in 1876–1880, drawing on much older heraldic sources.”
