History

Architect Nikola Bašić turned Zadar's waterfront into a piece of playable public art. The Sea Organ is a series of tuned pipes hidden under the marble steps — waves push air through them and the whole promenade plays low, hymn-like chords, different every time. Right next to it, the Sun Salutation is a 22-metre glass disc set into the pavement that gathers solar energy all day and lights up in shifting colours after dark. Hitchcock reportedly called Zadar's sunset the most beautiful in the world.

“Alfred Hitchcock, who visited Zadar in 1964, wrote in a letter that its sunset was 'more beautiful than the one in Key West.'”
