Why visit Stari Grad Plain
Stari Grad on Hvar is Croatia's oldest continuously inhabited town, founded in 384 BC by Greek colonists as Pharos. Just outside town, the Stari Grad Plain — a 2,400-year-old grid of vineyards and olive groves divided by dry stone walls — is still cultivated exactly as the Greeks laid it out.

History
Stari Grad on Hvar is Croatia's oldest continuously inhabited town, founded in 384 BC by Greek colonists as Pharos. Just outside town, the Stari Grad Plain — a 2,400-year-old grid of vineyards and olive groves divided by dry stone walls — is still cultivated exactly as the Greeks laid it out. It's the world's best-preserved example of ancient Greek agricultural land planning, and it's UNESCO-listed for that alone.
“The plain is still divided by the exact same stone walls the Greek colonists built in the 4th century BC — a 2,400-year-old landscape you can walk through unchanged.”
