Why visit Pula Arena
One of only six Roman amphitheatres in the world with all four side towers still standing, Pula's arena once packed 23,000 people in for gladiator fights. Today the honey-coloured Istrian limestone is a summer concert venue — Pavarotti, Sting and Tom Jones have all sung under its open sky.

History
One of only six Roman amphitheatres in the world with all four side towers still standing, Pula's arena once packed 23,000 people in for gladiator fights. Today the honey-coloured Istrian limestone is a summer concert venue — Pavarotti, Sting and Tom Jones have all sung under its open sky. Wander the underground galleries (once used to hold wild animals) for a small exhibition on Roman olive oil and wine, then come back at sunset when the western façade glows like something on fire.
“Napoleon's troops nearly dismantled the arena in 1805 to ship its stones to Venice — it survived because a local Venetian official begged to have the order reversed.”
