History
Croatia's oldest and most famous national park — UNESCO-listed since 1979 — is a chain of 16 turquoise-to-emerald lakes stepping down a limestone valley, joined by 90 waterfalls. Wooden boardwalks weave directly across the water; electric ferries link the upper and lower lake systems. The tallest fall, Veliki Slap, drops 78 metres. Arrive at opening (7 AM in summer) or in the last two hours to escape crowds — daytime queues can be brutal.
“The lakes' colour shifts constantly — from azure to green to grey — depending on mineral content, light angle and the time of year; they've been called nature's mood ring.”
