Why visit Pazin Cave & Castle
Pazin's medieval castle balances on the very edge of an enormous karst chasm where the Pazinčica river vanishes underground with a roar. Jules Verne set part of Mathias Sandorf here after peering over the drop in 1867, and the setting still delivers — a zipline now stretches 220 metres across the abyss.

History
Pazin's medieval castle balances on the very edge of an enormous karst chasm where the Pazinčica river vanishes underground with a roar. Jules Verne set part of Mathias Sandorf here after peering over the drop in 1867, and the setting still delivers — a zipline now stretches 220 metres across the abyss. Above it, the well-preserved castle houses Istria's ethnographic museum, and you can descend on guided cave tours to see where the water disappears.
“The cave inspired Jules Verne to write it into 'Mathias Sandorf' — his hero escapes prison by leaping into the chasm on a stormy night.”
