Why visit
Why visit Mljet National Park
Mljet is Dalmatia's greenest island and its western third is a national park of forested hills wrapped around two connected saltwater lakes. In the middle of the larger lake sits a 12th-century Benedictine monastery on its own tiny island — you take a shuttle boat out and back.

History
Mljet is Dalmatia's greenest island and its western third is a national park of forested hills wrapped around two connected saltwater lakes. In the middle of the larger lake sits a 12th-century Benedictine monastery on its own tiny island — you take a shuttle boat out and back. Rent a bike or kayak, do a full lake loop in about three hours, and stay for the sunset over the pine forests. Legend says Odysseus was so charmed here he lingered for seven years.
“According to local tradition, Homer's Calypso trapped Odysseus on Mljet for seven years in her cave — you can visit 'Odysseus' Cave' on the island's southern shore.”
