History
By the 1960s Grožnjan was nearly abandoned — a Venetian hilltop shell of empty houses. Then the government invited artists to move in rent-free, and today the entire town is a working artists' colony of some 30 galleries and studios. Wander the tight loops of stone lanes, listen for jazz drifting out of an open window (the town hosts a famous summer jazz school), and eat lunch on a terrace looking out over the Mirna valley to the sea.
“Every summer the town becomes an international jazz academy — bring your instrument and you can join impromptu jam sessions in the main square.”
