Why visit Lokvarka Waterfall Trail
Between the villages of Lokve and Fužine, the small Lokvarka stream drops through a series of five waterfalls totalling 30 metres of descent over less than a kilometre — a lovely and easily walkable natural feature that most visitors miss. A well-marked 3-km trail from the northern shore of Lokvarsko Jezero follows the stream downhill through beautiful mixed beech and fir forest, with wooden bridges crossing at each of the falls.

History
Between the villages of Lokve and Fužine, the small Lokvarka stream drops through a series of five waterfalls totalling 30 metres of descent over less than a kilometre — a lovely and easily walkable natural feature that most visitors miss. A well-marked 3-km trail from the northern shore of Lokvarsko Jezero follows the stream downhill through beautiful mixed beech and fir forest, with wooden bridges crossing at each of the falls. The largest, Vrelo Lokvarke, drops 12 metres into a bright emerald pool that is popular with local children as a swimming hole on hot summer days (very cold water, 8 °C year-round). The trail ends at Lepenica Lake making for a lovely 2-hour one-way walk between the two Fužine reservoirs. In autumn the beech forest turns gold and the low sun through the spray at the falls is spectacular. The trail is entirely shaded — a huge relief in July and August — and passes several fascinating karst features including a small ponor (sinkhole) where a side stream disappears completely underground. Bring water shoes if you plan to swim; the pool bottoms are limestone cobble.
“The Vrelo Lokvarke waterfall was a favourite bathing spot of the interwar Yugoslav royal family — King Alexander is reported to have visited three times between 1929 and 1934.”
