Why visit Lividraga Primeval Forest
Deep in the Risnjak National Park a strict reserve of just 66 hectares protects Lividraga — arguably Croatia's finest surviving stand of true primeval mixed beech and silver-fir forest. Trees here regularly exceed 400 years old and 50 metres tall, and the ecosystem represents what most of the Dinaric mountains looked like before human logging began.

History
Deep in the Risnjak National Park a strict reserve of just 66 hectares protects Lividraga — arguably Croatia's finest surviving stand of true primeval mixed beech and silver-fir forest. Trees here regularly exceed 400 years old and 50 metres tall, and the ecosystem represents what most of the Dinaric mountains looked like before human logging began. Access is deliberately restricted: only guided visits organised through the National Park headquarters in Crni Lug are permitted, typically Saturday mornings from June to September, and groups are limited to 12 people. The 3-km guided loop takes about 3 hours at a slow pace, threading through a cathedral of enormous grey trunks with a rangers' commentary on what makes primeval forest ecologically unique (no straight tree lines, all age classes present simultaneously, huge amounts of standing dead wood supporting extraordinary biodiversity including 47 species of woodpecker-nesting cavity users). Wildlife includes brown bear (tracks common), lynx, wolf, capercaillie and the exceptionally rare white-backed woodpecker. Booking is essential and confirms only 48 hours in advance based on ranger availability. One of the finest wildlife-primeval experiences in southeast Europe.
“Some of the silver firs in Lividraga's strict reserve were mature adults when Isaac Newton was publishing the Principia in 1687 — a small handful may be older still.”
