Why visit Đakovo Cathedral
Two red-brick towers 84 metres high dominate the Slavonian plain for miles around — Đakovo's neo-Romanesque cathedral, finished in 1882, was called by Pope John XXIII 'the most beautiful church between Venice and Istanbul'. Inside are frescoes by the Seitz brothers and an austere crypt holding Bishop Strossmayer, one of the great 19th-century Croatian intellectuals.

Pair with a visit to the state Lipizzaner stud farm on the edge of town.
“Đakovo's Lipizzaner stud, founded in 1506, is one of the oldest continuously operating horse-breeding farms in the world.”
