Why visit
Why visit House of the Batana (Casa della Batana)
In a single restored fisherman's house on the Rovinj waterfront, the Ecomuseum Casa della Batana tells the story of the batana — the flat-bottomed wooden boat that has defined life in this town for at least three centuries. The batana is more than a boat: it is a whole living culture of dialect, songs (bitinada, sung a cappella by fishermen returning at dusk), boat-building techniques and cuisine, and in 2016 UNESCO inscribed the Rovinj community's stewardship of the batana on its Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for intangible cultural heritage — one of only a handful of Croatian entries.

History
The museum is small (three rooms) but done with real love: original half-hull models, boatbuilder's tools, oral history recordings you can listen to on headphones, and an outstanding short film. From April to October the community organises regular Batana Nights: a small flotilla of restored wooden boats sets off from the harbour at sunset with musicians on board, ending at a spacio (traditional wine cellar) in the old town for supper of sardines, polenta and house wine. Booking is essential and part of the entry fee. Combine easily with a wander through Rovinj's old town or a coffee on the harbour front afterwards. The museum is at the heart of what makes Rovinj feel different from Croatia's other Venetian-veneer coastal towns — a living community, not just a set.
“There are still around 80 traditional batanas actively sailing out of Rovinj — more than in any other Adriatic port, thanks entirely to this ecomuseum's work.”
