Writing a detailed guide for Wörthersee…

Austria's warmest large alpine lake (summer temperatures reach 26 °C) stretches 17 km between Klagenfurt and Velden. The lakefront villas of Pörtschach and Velden are textbook Austro-Hungarian belle époque; the Maria Wörth peninsula has two medieval pilgrim churches reflected in the water. Brahms composed his Second Symphony on the lakeshore in 1877.

Fun facts

  • Brahms wrote that the Wörthersee melodies 'fly so thick you have to be careful not to step on them'.
  • The lake is so warm because it lies in a sheltered valley with no significant inflow — the water residence time is over 9 years.
