Writing a detailed guide for Sant Joan de Caselles…

One of the finest Romanesque churches in the Pyrenees, Sant Joan de Caselles has a three-storey Lombard bell tower and a single nave with wooden ceiling. Behind the altar a rare 12th-century stucco Calvary scene survives — Christ on the cross flanked by the sun, the moon, and Roman soldiers — discovered hidden behind a Baroque altarpiece in 1963.

Fun facts

  • The stucco Calvary is one of only a handful of complete Romanesque stucco compositions left in Europe.
  • It was hidden for centuries behind a wooden Baroque retable installed in the 17th century.
