Writing a detailed guide for Església de Santa Coloma…

The oldest church in Andorra, Santa Coloma dates to the 8th–9th centuries and is the only one in the country with a free-standing four-storey circular Lombard bell tower (added in the 12th century). Inside, faded 12th-century frescoes of the Maiestas Domini once decorated the apse — the originals are now in Berlin and Barcelona; high-fidelity reproductions sit in their place. A quiet, atmospheric stop ten minutes from the capital.

Fun facts

  • Its round bell tower is unique in Andorra — every other Romanesque tower in the country is square.
  • The original apse frescoes were sold abroad in 1930 and replaced with replicas projected onto the walls.
  • It is mentioned in the Acta de Consagració of 839 AD, the oldest surviving document referencing Andorra.
